The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
His child, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The plot was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, Brasília.
The police took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The judges found that the rioters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
