The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
