Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
